Abstract: Recently digital communications has experienced a phenomenal growth in both scope and application [1]. This is due to the following reasons. i) The use of digital communications offer flexibility and compatibility, in that the adoption of a common digital format makes it possible for a transmission system to sustain many different sources of informa -tion in a flexible manner. ii) The improved reliability made possible by use of digi - tal communications. iii) The availability of wide - band channels provided by geostationary satellites, optical fibres and coaxial cables. iv) The ever - increasing availability, of solid state tech -nology, which has made it possible to increase system complexity by orders of magnitude in a cost - effective manner. v) Efficient regeneration of the coded signals along the transmitted path. vi) The potential for communication privacy, and security through use of encryption. , vii) The possibility of a uniform format for different kinds of base band channels.
