In previous years, most of the image transmission has been accomplished through conventional analog techniques. Today, the trend in image transmission and storage is to use the digital instead of analog techniques. This may be attributed to the rapid growth in the use of digital computers as well as to the many inherent advantages of digital communication systems. If analog bandwidth of monochrome television is 5 MHz, the bandwidth of comparable quality digital TV would be 60 M bits/s or 30 MHz. With the increasing emphasis on the use of digital communication systems, digital image compress-ion techniques are drawing considerable interest as possible means for reducing the capacity requirements of digital communication channelsen_US
