The widespread use of computer networking necessitated the development of uniform standards and procedures to make 'open' systems communicate freely with each other. At a first step towards standardization, the International Standards Organisation (ISO),announced in 1977, a computer communications architecture with the definition of seven layers of functions necessary to create an 'open systems environment'. This architecture is called the OPEN SYSTEMS INTERCONNECTIONS Reference Model. The protocols and services associated with each layer are specified in the model. Recently, the Technical Committee 97 of the ISO has developed a draft ISO/DIS 8473 which describes a protocol standard, produced to , facilitate the interconnection of open systems. This standard covers the services and functions required to achieve such interconnection. The dissertation is an attempt to implement the services and the functions defined in the draft. The software is written in the Assembly Language of .DECSYSTEM-2050 and successfully run on the machine.en_US
