Abstract: The widespread of computer networking necessiated the development of uniform standards and procedures to make 'open' system communicate freely with each other. As a first step towards standardization, the Interna- tional Standards Organisation (ISO), announced in 1977, a computer communications architecture with the definition of seven layers of functions necessary to create an 'Open systems environment'. This architecture is called the OPEN SYSTEMS INTERCONNECTION Reference Model, The protocols and services associated at each layer are specified in the modelĀ°. The dissertation is an attempt to implement the protocols and services defined in the model. The protocols associated with and the services offered, by the following layers have been implemented: LAYER-.2 HDLC Protocol LAYER..3 X,.25 Protocol Routing Service. LAYER--4 TRANSPORT STATION LAYER-.5 Authentication Service. LAYER-6 FILE TRANSFER PROTOCOL (FTP) Data Compression Service. Data Encryption Service. The software is written in the Assembly Language of DECSYSTEM-20 and successfully run on the machine.
