Abstract: In the last decade, the computer world has seen many intelligent totoring systems. The inclusion of artificial intelligence techniques in conventional Computer-Assisted Instructional Systems results an effective, new instructional method called Intelligent Computer-Assisted Instructions. An intelligent tutoring system using production system as a knowledge representation technique is called Rule b Based Tutoring System. In this dissertation, the basic philosophy of a Rule-Based Tutoring System is presented. The tutoring system for organic compounds classification is illustrated. This rule-based tutoring system creates a `reactive environ-ment' in which a student learns by trying his own ideas rather than by instructions, provides useful information to a student, expresses its own knowledge, explains its problem solving reasoning and provides help in the event of an incorrect answer. The main goal to develop this tutoring system is to establish one to one relationship to a student with an expert who helps the student to create, experiment with and debug his own ideas.
