Abstract: When a program is developed, the programmer will write in the source language, which will be assembled (or compiled), loaded and executed. During its development necessary modif-ications are incorporated. Some modifications are such as needed only during execution. Source program can be modified with the help of editor. An editor is a program which allows the programmer to create and modify text. Text or source program stored in the internal buffer can be edited by using editing routines. The sophistication of an editor depends greatly on its operating environment. Large computer systems allow for maximum editor flexibility. The user interface must be flexible but simple and commonly needed facilities must be cheap. In this dissertation, an interactive line-editor for Devnagari Script has been developed. The proposed editor can create and modify text. It can perform almost all the important editing functions such as searching the first occurence of text, printing or displaying the file or range of lines, removing or edeleting text, insertion of text from terminal, copying lines, replacing a complete line of text, substituting a new string of characters and extending a line of text. The text to be modified is stored as a file using the program INITIAL. At times error messages are flashed, so as to guide the user. Commands are simple and easy to use. The flowcharts of the proposed algorithms for different commands have been given. Editor has been developed on BBC microcomputer using 3ASIC. Further improvements can be incorporated on the lines suggested in this dissertation.
