The dissertation work can be broadly. viewed as the design and implementation of a hierarchical file system. The file system is UNIX based and an attempt has been made to incorporate most of the salient features of UNIX file system. Two algorithms have been designed ' to implement this file system. The first helps in constructing and maintaining the directory tree and enables the user to do various manipulations on the directory system. After a valid authorisation of the user, he is allowed directory manipulations like, inserting, deleting files or directories, renaming a file, having a printout of his directory and modifying access rights associated with his file for security purposes. The second algorithm' associates with a file name, a sample text file and enables the user to manipulate the text. Thus it acts as an editor for the file. The user can create the text file or do certain alterations in the text e.g., appending to the file, adding and deleting characters. The file system has been implemented on the DEC-2050 Computer system.en_US
