Abstract: This thesis deals with Timed Pe trine t—based modeling and performance analysis of communication protocols. In this respect, we have demonstrated the suitability of a class of Timed Petrinets to model the salient—time dependent chara-cteristics of protocols. For the analysis purpose, first a simple protocol (AB protocol) has been considered. We have calculated the maximum time taken by the protocol in completing its given sequence of operations for different conditions, i.e. error recovery, message loss and time out. Then, two standard protocols (Euro bus protocol and X.21) have been selected. The selection of these two illustrates that the technique which we have used [K Garg 84J is quite suitable for the performance analysis of complex protocols. The X.21 standard protocol has been considered at Physical Layer where the connect disconnect phase is impor-tant. The Euro bus protocol is different from this in the sense that it is shared among processors, memories and I/O devices in a variety of single and multiprocessor configura-tions.
