Issue Date: 1985
Abstract: The quintessence of my dissertation is to access centralized files through a local area network. Hence a file server system, based on UNIX file system, has been implemented on BBC microcomputer system. This file server supports binary and text files. Mode of access to files can be sequential or random. A multiple—access mechanism enables the users to share a file at the same time with read access. A file protection mechanism enables the owner to restrict the operations that can be performed on the file. Directory service maps the user given file names onto physical addresses. Directories are files which normal user can not create. The privileges to create and delete dire-ctories are given to some class of users. Two types of access are allowed to directories one is owner and other one is public. This file server has also been designed to to handle repeated requests. Finally a light—wight protocol has been adopted for transfer of files.
