Abstract: Picture transmission and its storage has assumed a dominant role in our life. There is a large amount of picture transmission taking place apart from the commer-c e television broadcast. The picture signals when transmitted in analog .form suffer severe attenuation and are effected by noise. Coding of picture signals into digital ..form removes many of the deficiencies suffered by analog transmission methods and in addition offersmany other distinct advantages and facilities. A number of techniques are available for the binary coding of picture signals. The DPCM system has been par-ticularly.chosen for this dissertation because of the advantages offered by DPCM over FCM and DM and the hardware simplicity of the DPCM coder over other more efficient coding schemes. The basic purpose of this dissertation is to review the techniques of picture coding and then consider hard-ware implementation of the DPCM system. The DPCM system has, been implemented with ordinary components and TTL integrated circuits. The sampling rate of 3.33 MHz with 3 bit coding has been chosen which results in a bit rate of 10 M b/s. The system has been tested for monochrom picture signals.
