Formatting systems are concerned with the physical layout of a document for hard and soft-copy media. Documents are formatted according to the specifications of the users. Because of increasing costs of manually produced documents, decreasing costs of computers and storage, and the availabi-lity of high quality computer controlled printers, it has become both feasible and. worthwhile to use computer formatting systems. They can be used for technical, business, literary documents, writing letters, drawing tables etc. • In this dissertationaDocument Formatting System has been developed which provides general formatting functions and faci-lities for writing letters, drawing tables and lines. At times error-messages- are flashed, so as to guide the user. Commands are simple and easy to use. There are no distinct lines for commands and text. Formatting system has been developed on DEC-2050 SYSTF. 7 using ALGOL-.60. ALGOL-60 was used due to its string processing features. Further improvements can be incorporated on the lines suggested in the dissertation.en_US
