Distributed Computer Systems have a number of potential advantages over centralised systems, especially where the application is itself physically distributed. The processes located physically apart in a distributed system have to co-ordinate and synchronise their actions to enable the complete function to be performed. It is the function of the Transport Layer to establish, manage and terminate sequenced, flow-controlled, error-free end-to--end connections between such remote processes. In this dissertation an attempt has been made to design the Transport Layer for a typical Distributed Com-puter System. The Transport Layer is designed in a modular fashion by splitting its own functions into separate processes themselves. The design is done using a superset of standard Pascal and some extended constructs relating -to the Message Passing primitives.en_US
