dc.description.abstractThe quality of our environment is deteriorating at an alarming rate due tovarious natural and man-made ` activities. In this era of environmental consciousness the greatest need of the day is to monitor environmental pollution on a global scale. Our water resources, which forth the most important part of the environment and which are necessary for our very existance have been polluted due to fast industrial developments and other human activities. The problem is global and warrants immediate solution. The environmental laboratory approaches of analysing water samples from various water outlets are expensive, time consuming and cumbersome and therefore are not effe-ctive in pollution monitoring on global scale. Of late, the techniques of remote sensing, the* science of surveillance, have been successfully employed in monitoring water quality. However, no work has been reportedly undertaken in this country in this direction. The burden of this dissertation is to initiate investigations in the direction of utilizing an indegen-ously developed ISRO, spectro-radiometer-0 2 for measuring some physical water quality parameters as a first step.en_US
