Issue Date: 1984
Abstract: The present study presents a detailed analysis of the scroll casing of a large power house, The 'structure has been analysed by Finite Element Method which :Ls thy: ' most versatile of the available techniques in analysing 0 power stations,; The problem is o, three dimensional one However, a simplified procedure of plane strain and G.xi,sym- ' metric analyses has been used to ci,ssess the behaviour of the scroll case, The finite element mesh is judiciously chosen so as to get well--proportioned elements, and duo consideration has been given to economy as well as a ccur<wcye, The three-dimensional problem Is simplified by taking sixteen radial slices of. the casing for plane strain study and by taking four axi-symmetric sections for checking the general 3--D io ha vL our, Deflected profile, stress contours, and principal stress vectors are obtained for each s'ctIon, The structure is analysed for different loads, and their combinations, ,Ao discussion of results Is also presented and the available results are checked whereever possible, Finally the scope for future work Is out lined.
