Abstract: The rivers while its passage through cities receives large quantities of waste both from the domestic and industrial origin rendering it unfit for many uses by city dwellers. The conditions become precarious when these drains bring untrec ed waste waters. Lucknow city is situated on the banks of river Gomti. The six major drains discharging waters into it are Sarkata, pata, Mohan Meakins, Martyrs Memorial, Paper Mill and Haider Canal. The study pertained to the pollutional load from these drains, being discharged into the river Comti. The study revealed that a total of about 208 Million litres per day of waste is discharged into the river by these drains amounting to about 8 percent of the dry weather flow, The BOD and Suspended solids contributed per day amounts to 52300 kg and 8810 kg. The major pollution is contributed by the Haider Canal and sarkata nala which bring basically the domestic waste. The authorities should take up the problem immediately either to provide treatment units to combat this heavy pollu-tion or to lay an intercepting sewer to collect these nala waste waters and discharged them down stream of the city to avail self cleaning capacity of the river.
