dc.description.abstract | Pavement surface characteristics govern the important aspects of smooth and efficient operation of traffic. The modern highways warrant the need for safe and efficient operations of vehicles at high design speeds. The road conditions must provide the requirements of high speed of travel with high standard of traffic safety. The friction between vehicle tires and road surface is a determinant of safe speed and stopping distance requirements in accelerating, decelerating and turning maneuvers. The hardness and smoothness of a road surface effects the cost of vehicle operation and driver's comfort and safety. The nature of binder have an effect on the skid property of the bituminous surfaces, it has been observed that surfaces made with the different type of binder give different texture specially after being subjected to action of traffic and weathering. In the present thesis report British Portable Skid Resistance Tester tested five types of bituminous pavement surfaces (Bituminous Macadam, Semi-dense bituminous concrete, Mastic Asphalt with modifier and without modifier & Asphalt concrete for various binder content). The mix specifications for the wearing courses were selected as per IRC and MOST specifications. Then correlation is developed between Skid Resistance and Binder Content for all the pavements. iii | en_US |
