The problem has been taken up to cater the need of houses which are built in Pillages. The conventional. size of mud brick walls having thickness ranging from 30 cm to 50 cm for single storey structure may be uneconomical. The present study was planned with the following objectives (i) to study the prevailing design and construction practices of mud houses. (ii) To study the effect of the size of bricks on their compressive strength. (iii) To determine the strength and stability of mud and mud brick walls. (iv) To consider whether these walls could support multi-storey structures. (v) To Y.se different type. of materials and to compare their effect on the behaviour of mud walls and bricks. Keeping in view the above objectives the following works have been conducted (i) Survey of the villages -for houses con"Stru- oted with mud and mud brick walls. (ii) Compressive strength tests on four sizes of bricks viz (i) 6 cm x 3 cm x 2 cm. (ii) 12 cm x 6 cm x 4 cm. (iii) 30 cm x 15 cm x 10 cm and (iv) 30 cm x- 2J cm x 20 cm. constructed with mud and mud with straw, were conduc-ted. (v) Iodel walls of size 50 cm x 50 cm and 100 ,cm x 100 cm of varying thickness viz 6 cm, 9 cm, , 12 cm and 18 cm were constructed and tested with mud mixed with wheat straw, mud bricks, and with mud and bamboo mesh for their compressive strength. The study concluded that (i) the compressive strength of bricks decreases as the brick size increases both in case of mud bricks and bricks mixed with straw. (ii) The strength of mud bricks mixed with straw is more• as compared with plane mud bricks for all the three types of soils. (iii) The strength of mud walls with straw increases as the width of the wall increases and this is true for mud brick walls also. The strength of mud brick walls for the same width is more as compared with mud walls with straw. There is no significant increase observed in the strength with increase in width, for walls constructed with bamboo mesh. (iv) k.d brick walls may with stand the stresses induced due to loads upto dnublc storey structures.en_US
