Abstract: Industrial revolution brought a marked change in the structure of the cities. With the setting up of industries and cities growing up around the industrial centers, there was a sudden inflow of human population into these so-called industrial centers. This heavy influx of people caused housing problems in these areas. With the whole area being used up in lateral direction, the only way out was to move the building vertically upwards in the form of multistory buildings. With the construction of multistory buildings, there was a factor which played an important role in the design of the members of these buildings which was the lateral load. Generally, the designer skipped the earthquake and wind forces for low height buildings since they were not predominant except in high seismic areas But with the rise in height of buildings these forces started playing a decisive role in the design of the beams and columns of high rise buildings
