Issue Date: | 1977 |
Abstract: | The investigations carried out here is to provide additional data on the dynamic properties of clays - under oscillatory and transient loading conditions. Sustained shear load was applied in both the loading conditions. The oscillatory simple shear apparatus at the School of Research and Training in Earthquake Engineering, University of Roorkee, Roorkee, was used for conducting the tests. Various parameters studied during testing include normal stress, oscillatory shear stress and sustained shear stress and the tests were conducted on a clay in undisturbed as well as remoulded" states. The undisturbed soil samples were collected from the bed of river Dhanauri near Roorkee. Frequency throughout the testing was one cycle per second. For the soil studied the following conclusions were drawn: (1) The angle of internal friction of soil determined by static and dynamic tests are same irrespective of the number of cycles of loading. 0 (2) The dynamic strength of the clay is dependent on the number of cycles of loading, the strength decreasing with increase in number of cycles. (3) The transient strength of the clay is greater than its normal strength. |
