The present study deals v ith the effect of footing width on settlements in silt of low compressibility. Field tests were conducted on footings of sizes 10 cin x 10. cm , 20 cn x 20 cm, 30 cm x 30 cm, 1i5 cm x L5 cm and 60 cm x 60 cm at dry density 1.82 g/cc and moisture content 15%. Laboratory tests were performed on footings of sizes 5 cm x 5 cr_Z, 10 crn x 10 cm , 15 C;" x 15 cm and 20 cm x20 cm at dry density 1.8 g/cc, 1.63 g/cc and 1.J.i3 g/cc in dry states. Tests were also carried out in wet state at moisture content lL,.6/ in the laboratory. Equations were developed correlating the settlements for different sizes of footings. These equations were compared with Terza h.i's equations for sand and clay and test results conducted in the field.en_US
