Abstract: Knowledge of physical terrain is one of the most important factor in making decisions about the utilization and management of land. Due to rising population and higher per capita use of resources, pressure is increased on terrain resources. Because of this, terrain must be optimally and economically used. To decide about the suitability of the terrain, terrain modelling plays an important role. Terrain analysis techniques with Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) are useful in determining a number of hydrological indices. Digital elevation data and terrain attributes such as slope and aspect are now viewed as essential data inputs to the new generation of environmental, hydrologic and water quality models. In a mathematical model of earth surface, DEM is useful to derive a number of parameters such as height, slope, aspect, watersheds, radiation incidence, hill-shades and cut and fill estimates, intervisibility between two points etc. iii The rapid dissemination of GIS techniques in the last few years have led to increasing problems in certain areas. These problems cannot be solved properly by using the traditional 2-dimensional GIS statistical models and software. Therefore 3-D GIS is required, which has appropriate statistical and geometrical data structures for describing the 3 dimensional object types, with ability to manage the changing attributes. This study focusses light on the generation of digital elevation model and calculation of various terrain attributes, such as slope and aspect which are the main keys in obtaining relation with vegetation and agriculture type. ARC/INFO and MGE GIS packages are used for spatial 2D and 3D representation of these parameters as well as for terrain modelling by overlaying two themes. P- visibility analysis and land form classification of the terrain have also carried out. Overlay analysis is also done on the coverages named as slope, aspect, landuse/landcover map and crop type maps. Finally digital terrain models are generated using GIS. These are used in terrain analysis.
