Making the industrial effluent match the quality standards set up by pollution control bodies is the foremost requirement to save our water, land and atmosphere from environmental degradation. Pulp and paper and distilleries are an ever expanding industries which causes considerable pollution. Various methods are used to treat pulp and paper mill and distilleries effluents. The methods have their own limitations. Therefore even with efficient methods, the required quality 'of treated effluent is not achieved. For this purpose research and development at various places is going on to evolve an economically viable solution to the problem. This study pertains to further improve the quality of the treated paper mill and distilleries effluent using H202. In this study, removal of COD due to different H202 dosage at various adjusted pH values of the final treated effluent have been studied to ascertain optimum dose of H202. Jar Test apparatus was employed for mixing of H202 with effluent. H2SO4 or NaOH was used to adjust pH value. The overall results show significant removal of COD . While the optimum dosage of H202 varied from 25 mg/1 to 300 mg/I depending upon the sample pH value and the parameters COD however was more than the allowable limit which calls for improvement at the pretreatment units of the effluent treatment plant (ETP). Thus using H202 for treatment appears to be a good choice for improving quality of the final effluent of the ETP at paper mill and distillery.en_US
