Abstract: Foundation plays an important role in the design of any structure. If the loads are heavy, special care has to be taken while choosing and designing the foundation, so that it can transmit the loads safely without causing excessive settlements. In this report, two types of foundations which are commonly used for heavily loaded structures have been analysed to observe the effects of some important parameters. - The first case considered is the foundation of a bridge. Generally Wells/Caissons are used as foundations for bridges. As these bridges are subjected to lateral loads apart from the normal loads and moments, the well should be checked for stability against these loads. IRC:45-1972 has given two approaches to carryout the lateral stability analysis., These are (a.) Elastic approach and (b.) Ultimate approach. But these are applicable only for non-cohesive soils. So, an attempt has been made to extend this analysis for c-4 soils. The second case considered is a foundation for LPG storage bulltets. To reduce the chances of differential settlements, usually rafts are used as foundations for bullets. One such case base been analysed to observe the effect of loose patches beneath the bullets.
