Public transportation constitutes one of the most fundamental needs of urban living. The alarming growth of urban centres is a well known global phenomenon. National Commission on Urbanisation has estimated by 2001 AD, the urban population will be 350 million and there would be 40 metropolitan cities in India. Among the four metropolitan_cities_i_e.„-DethiTBombar,-Madras and-Calcutta , Delhi has highest growth rate and its population is expected to reach to the tune of 12.2 million by 2001 AD. The total number of vehicles in Delhi exceeds the total number of vehicles together in Bombay, Calcutta and Madras. System Integration incorporates the public transport modes into a single coordinated planning and operations program that can make the most efficient use of resources to ensure urban mobility to better serve the users. System integration occurs at three levels i.e., institutional ,operational and physical. Public transport integration measures have been adopted around the world were Bus/LRT interface in Western Canada ,BART ,Santiago Metro etc. Design and analysis of integrated public transportation system requires analysis of bus route and rail operation individually. This will follow the design and analysis of integration of bus route and rapid transit system. Bus route simulation model can be used as a tool to perform operational analysis of urban bus system.RTS model can be used in the planning of metro networks. The efficiency index found to be for integrated route than the individual bus route .The passenger waiting index found to be more for bus route than integrated route. The integration between bus ans RTS will reduce pollution and noise effects, relieve congestion on bus route ,reduce accidents and increase comfort. The integration for long distance routes will reduce travel of passengers .Attempt has been made to develop softwares for operational analysis of bus routes,RTS and integrated system. The software shall be of immense help for the decision makers involved in the planning ,design and operation of large public transportation system in Metropolitan cities.en_US
