Issue Date: 1998
Abstract: Computers are widely used in Civil Engineering design as they can perform computational tasks of a magnitude far beyond the capability of any human. The problems of analysis, design and costing for frame type and shaft type staging of tanks with their foundations have been dealt in this dissertation. Stagings are important part of an overhead water tank. They transfer the load of container of taiik to the foundations. The staging may be shaft type or frame type. One type of staging may be suitable in one set of conditions and second type in some other conditions. So, it is useful to find out which type of staging is economical in given condition. The conditions which can vary are capacity of tank, height of staging, soil bearing capacity, earthquake zone, etc. Hence 2 computer programmes were developed and above listed four important design parameters were varied. It was found that shaft type is more economical for large capacities (around 1000 m3), in earthquake. zone 3 & zone 4, while frame type is economical for med &un (about 500 ill) and smaller capacity . The software is user friendly and includes relevant provision of 1S: 456-1978, IS: 1893-1984, IS: 3370-part II, and IS: 13920- 1993. The software is tested with relevant examples of standard book.
