To assess the mixed traffic impact on highway pavements, the common approach now being adopted is to convert all axle loads into a single unit of equivalent standard axle (ESA), which is the number of passages of a standard axle load that will cause the same amount of damage to the pavement as the mixed traffic. American Association of State Highway Officials (AASHO) Road Test is the only comprehensive source of information on the relative damaging effect of different individual axle loads. In this test, a pavement section was trafficked by axle loads of single magnitude. Relation between axle load and damaging power was obtained by comparing the number of repetitions of an axle load of given magnitude required to cause structural failure of a pavement with the number of repetitions associated with another axle load to bring the same failure condition. The generally accepted interpretation of results yielded the well known fourth power relation between magnitude of load axle and its structural damaging power. In the present study, a brief description of alternative incremental method (AIM) of analysis is given. A software ALTEF has been developed based on AIM and the AASHO Road Test results have been reanalysed using this software to understand the mechanism of pavement deterioration under mixed traffic conditions and to derive more realistic relationship between axle load and its damaging power. The data of axle load surveys conducted on different National Highways by CRRI, New Delhi and COTE, University of Roorkee, Roorkee during 1988 to 1993 have been used to study the variation in VDF with influencing parameters.en_US
