dc.description.abstractWater is one of the most vital resources for life and for the development of any country. There have been considerable advances both in methodology and technology for the exploration and exploitation of ground water resources during the last two decades. In the present study, a Geographic Information System (GIS) based model has been developed for delineating ground water source areas. A 2-Dimensional Finite Element Model (FEM) has been developed for simulating the ground water flow system. Output from FEM was given input to the developed GIS model. In order to delineate the ground water potential zones of the study area different thematic maps pertaining to lithology, geomorphology, drainage, surface water bodies, soil and slope were prepared by conjunctive use of remote sensing and ancillary data. All the thematic maps were integrated and analysed using GIS. Finally ground water potential areas were delineated. 73 percentage of the study area falls under moderate category of ground water potential. The above study has demonstrated the capabilities of remote sensing technique and GIS for the study of ground water exploration.en_US
