dc.description.abstractThe modern city is a complex organism. It is a great human enterprise serving the material and spiritual needs of man. It is a utility for collective living. To arrange all facilities in the city that provides the community with essential services is a function of city planning. City planning is a guide to orderly development to promote the ,health, safety, welfare and convenience of the people. Commonly water supply and sewer lines are laid along the major streets of the city. Therefore an optimal design of water supply and sewerage systems determine the length and pattern of the street. In turn it determines the size and pattern of the city served by these systems. Formulas are developed to calculate the optimum length of the street and cost of water supply and sewerage facilities for various types of city pattern. It is the function of population density and water demand. Therefore, land use zones which have different population densities and water demand results in different optimum length and pattern.en_US
