Abstract: As a flat slab does not have beams and is directly supported over columns, its behaviour under load is altogether different than that of ordinary slab, in beam and slab arrangements. Therefore special attention has been given to study its behaviour and design methods, based on elastic as well as plastic analysis, have been recommended by various codes of practices and authors* In this dissertation an attempt has been made to investigate the feasibility of various design methods and to°find out critical collapse condition and corresponding collapse load. The investigation is carried out through the case study of a square intermediate panel subjected to uniformly distributed load. An exact analysis is dorms using finite difference technique to obtain elastic deflection and moment pattern of the panel. Design methods based on elastic analysis and also those prescribed by I.S. Code 456- 1964 and A.C.I. Code 318 -71 are briefly incorporated.
