Abstract: Filtration is the process of removirg fine suspended and colloidal matter from waters by passing it through granular media.Oeveral workers have derived or developed suitable relationships to predict Si .crate quality and head loss at any time during the run. Some have used suitable mathematical models and others have used semi. amperical approaches. Hsiung has applied statistical approach to predict behaviour of filters. He has developed expressions to plot performance curves, which are then used to predict filtrate quality and head loss. He had used iron floc suspensions for developing the expressions. In this work effort has been made to ascertain the suitability of such curves to predict the performance of sand filters columns that directly admit only alum coagulated waters. This work shows that certain mod ificati.on are necessary for the expressions prpoposed by Hsiung. Such modified curves though are very useful for predicting increase in head loss r' do not give sufficiently reliable results for predicting filtrate quality,
