Abstract: In this investigation an attempt has been made to obtain load versus settlement curve of a strip footing from the stress-strain characteristics of the soil. The stress-strain characteristics of the soil were obtained in the laboratory from the triaxial compression test. . To the observed data a poly-- nomial equation of third degree was fitted between the deviator stress and the axial strain. Stresses in the soil mass were computed from Eouss inesq's theory, for a rigid strip footing. These stresses on substi-tution in the stress-strain relation gave strain at a particular stress level which on integration gave the settlement of footing. From the proposed theory load versus settlement curves were predicted for 5 cros and 10 cms strip footing in the case of Ranipur sand and 2.54 on strip footing in the case of Kuttanad clay. These load versus settlement curves were compared with the actual load versus settlement curves, cf these fc . ings and were found to he in reasonable agreement.
