dc.description.abstract | The two important characteristics of our present times are the popu3.stion explosion and the rising expectations of p+ro$ e, The not foot of these characteristics is that demand for water to rising at a very fast pace Imost doubling every tewenty five yearn. Water formerly used only for rtomestic purposes Is now also used for navigation, for irrigation, for generation of hydropower, for fisheries, and for recreation. Some negative values of water are required to be controlled e.g. draim ge,, s .inity contras* flood control# sediment control; Insect control, pollution abatement etc. It Is obvious that ioie of the uses are compatible stele some are conflicting with each other. Although till as , to as In 1930, the general practice throughout the vorld was to develop individual projects for specific individual purposes, but in view of the ever increasing demand of water for purposes which are rmct r compatible and partly conflicting , the exhaustion of readily available water resources, and increasing costs involved in developing water resources$ the inevitable trend now is towards integrated planning of multipurpose development of water resource pro3ects, This enables economic development and efficient allocation of scarce water :resources amongst various purposes to be served.:. | en_US |
