Abstract: In this study the effects of interference phenomenon on bearing capacity of soil for two footings are studied by model tests. Both the two aimepsional ,an,-? three dimensional tests have been conduced. Two, dimensional tests were conducted on f~otinq of 7.5 cm widith,in a box of size 80 cm x 40 cm x 7.5 an (width), Three dimensional tests were conducted on square foot-ings of 7.5 cm and 10 cm width, and on rectangular footings with length/breadth ratio of 1.33, 2 and 3. These tests were conduct-ed in a model tank if size 114.5 cm x 114.5 cm x 50 cm (high). ^;11 the tests were conducted on uniform dry Ranipur sand compacted at a rel _ate density of '75 qa Results obtained from these tests indicate that the hear-ing caaacity decreases as the spacing increases upto a certain spa.cinq ant- then shows a slight increase in bearing tastily after further increase in snacinG. Results are in reasonable agreement with they analytical data of the previous investigators. The effects of interference of footings on settlement and tilt are also included., Mechanism of rupture surface in two dimensional tests and extent cf failure surface in thr,.-c dimen- sion,al 'c est s were studied. :1n exhaustive review of the pertaining literature on the topic is also made.
