Abstract: Doubly curved thin shell roofs in form of hyperbolic and elliptic paraboloids rectangular in plan (generally shallow) have been frequently used in recent years. As a consequence, much attention has been devoted to the study of their structural behaviour. ftowevar, because of the mathematical dtffSculties, the practical design of these doubly curved shells has boen based on the assumption of membrane state of stress in the shell. Charts and tables are available for design of hyperbolic parabolic paraboloidal shells for the membrane forces. The problem of membrane displacements have been studied by number of authors' Usually the correct boundary Conditions cannot be satisfied. for t;' : ^ c f shells of negative Gaussian curvature# flugge4 and Geylying concluded that extensional deformations predf cted by the membrane theory are unrealistic. These facts indicate the necessary of applying the more accurate bending. theory in the analysts of these shell forms...
