Rheology as applied to bituminous materials# soil and bituminous mixes is briefly reviewed. The need for introduction of time factor in pavement design is stressed and previous rk in this direction Is also mentioned. The theoretical theoratteal considerations of soil. bitu-men deformation in the light of rate process theory is critically reviewed.. The thixotroptethixotropic behaviour of #oil bitumen under constant sustained load# repetitive load* stress relaxation and also under load applied at different constant rates of strain is studied by means of laboratory experiments. The effect of confinement on def o mat ion of soil-bitumen is also studied# The method of developing models and equations from a*perimert results is also indicated. An approach for including element with pavement design is also discussed.en_US
