A new theory is presented for the evaluation of bear-ing capacity factors of soils for shallow rough footings, based on bilinear failure surf ace in the shear failure zone.. The computed bearing capacity factors NC, Na and Icy are found to tally closely with those obtained by Terzaghi's method. In additional bearing capacity factor 'Ns' has been defined, which takes into account the influence of 'the swelling pressure on the bearing capacity of the expansive soils. the experimental investigations carried out on four different soils having different expansive characteristics, showed a very close agreement with the theoretical values of the bearing, capacity computed, based on the new proposed theory.en_US
