Issue Date: 1968
Abstract: In this dissertation an attempt has been made to study a few selected methods of Exterior Orientation, program some of the analytical methods and to compare them among themselves in respect of their accuracy and efficiency. The introduction to the problem and the uses of known elements of Exterior Orientation are given in Chapter 1 and Chapter 2. Geometry of Exterior orientation and classification of various methods are presented in Chapter 3. A brief description about two important graphical methods is also included therein. Chapter 4 reviews some selected analytical methods of Exterior Orientation and the Chapter 5 is devoted to the expert mental details. The selected methods have been tried for two types of terrains (1) Flat Terrain (2) Hypothetical Terrain with relief. The data compiled and the results obtained from the IBM 162o are given in Appa.idix 1-6. The analy~tis and discussion of results is given in Chapter 6. It has been found that Earl Church's method gives very good results subject to the condition that the heights of the control points in the terrain should be correctly known. Prof. H.L. Oiwal's method, a recently introduced method is fast and easy but it can be expected to give the desired accuracy only after the iterative procedure for it has been devised. The third method, i.e., Smith's has been provisionally programmed and will need further improvement and perfection.
