dc.description.abstractThe procedures and application of the results of various field penetration tests developed recently, differ from place to place. They have to be studied in conjunction with one another, and realistic values of soil parameters determined. Historical development of various penetration devices has been dealt systematically. The reported corr-elations among their results, and their individual relationship to bearing capacity and settlement have also been critically reviewed. The common penetration tests, namely, Standard Penetration Tests, Static Cone Penetration Tests, Dynamic Cone Penetration Tests using cones of dia. 2", 2.5", 2.75" and apex angle 600, Modified Dynamic Cone Penetration Tests, and Vane Shear Tests have been conducted at two sites in Roorke e . The variation of their results with depth has been studied. Laboratory tests have also been conducted on the disturbed and undisturbed samples collected from both sites. The strata have been classified according to I.S. Specifications. A comparative study of the results has been made in every stratum. Certain correlations between the results have been suggested and some verified. The results of the laboratory strength tests have also been correlated with the results of the field tests. Certain conclusions have been drawn regarding the applicability of the tests in different types of soils and the validity of the correlations established.en_US
