dc.description.abstractThis thesis deals with the sidesway analysis of rigid water 'towers with special emphasis on the study of the effect of diagonal bracing on their performance. In order to visualise the effect of joint rotations on stresses induced in the members of such a tower, a typical problem has been worked out for both, the diagonally braced and the unbraced cases. The drawback of analysing the towers ignoring joint rotations and the advantage of using diagonal bracing have been clearly brought out. The theoretical analysis reveals that, in the example considered, ignoring of joint rotations increases the stiffness by as much as 25% over the one calculated by taking joint rotations into account. The diagonal braces increase the sway stiffness of the tower reducing the period of vibration. But the moments in the stiff members are considerably reduced. Large energy absorbing capac-° ity is imparted by the bars to the tower before its collapse. For a verification of analytical work and for studying the dynamic behaviour of concrete towers, a one—eighth scale model was constructed of a previously designed reinforced concrete tower• In the model an arrangement of turn buckles was used in the diagonals to make them effective or ineffective as desired. Tests were performed to measure strain, deflection, periods of vibration and damping at various stages of loading for both, the braced and the unbraced conditions of the tower.en_US
