In the treatment of water* chlorination is used as the disinfectant in almost all of the water treatment Works and is reg rded as the most reliable method of dis. infection, s such .t is a subject_ of great interest not only to a layman, who thinks that its , use is only to kill the known disease producing organisms, if dosed, properly, but to the people associated with the water treatment as in addition to its disinfecting property it is also Involved in several otheer phenomenon. The ie practice of chlorination hes encouraged the use of rapid sand filters. It is thought that when chlori. nation has to be done (as neither the elou sand filter nor the rapid sand filter gives 100 percent bacterial efficiency)., it is worthwhile to go for rapid sand filters which though give a lesser bacterial efficiency than slow sand filters, occupies lessor area i thus affecting big economy in land in cities. hlorinatica of Water Supplies is not as simple a phenomenon as it appears and a lot is yet to be discovered about _ the various roles played by it in the treatment of water..
