The whole building has been divided into eight units and one Assembly Hall. The division of units is based on , the positions of expansion joints. The building is of framed construction type and all the walls shall serve the purpose of either partition or cladding. The widths of wings in different units are different. :n most of the units the width of the wing is 50 ft with 16'-24' two bays frame and 10 ft verandah. In sane, it is 42 ft wide with 16 ft - 16 ft two bay frame and 10 ft verandah. In unit VIII it is single bay frame with 32 ft bay width and 8 ft verandah. The spacing of all the columns is 10'-O'' centre t.o centre. The columns in various frames are connected by longitudinal and cross beams at each floor level. The external verandah columns do not form the part of main f rame s. Expansion Joints - The effects of expansion and contraction due to variation in temperature in structural frame, though comparatively of the lesser consequence than in other types of construction, cannot, however, be ignored. The provision of expansion joints at. suitable places is of prime importance. Normally for -3- framed structure, expansion joints may be located at 150 ft apart or even closer, if the variation in tempera-ture is too high. Assuming the temperature to vary fran 450F to 110°F and the maximum expansion allowed 3/4'' the length of structure where expansion' joints can be provided is found as follows: The co-efficient of expansion for concrete is 6.5 x 106 st/degree F. If y is 'the maximum length of continuous structure after whith expansion joints are to be provided, the total expansion under maximum variation of temperature tall be, 6.5 x 10-6x ( 110 - 45) x y ft Equating this to 3/4'' i.e. 1/16 ft we have 6.5 x 10-6x 65 x y = 1/16 Therefore y = 106/ (6.5 x 65 x 16) 106/ 6760 = 150 ft approx. In the present case of medical college building, the expansion joints have not been placed at more than 150 ft distance and the position of such joints has been fixed at the points where two blocks meet at right angles. On the basis of position of expansion joints only the building has been divided into eight units. In a R.C.C. frame the expansion joint is naturally obtained by the provision of Iwin columns and twiny beamsen_US
