Abstract: With its unique structure, the Z-source inverter can utilize the shoot through states to boost the output voltage, which improves the inverter reliability greatly, and provides an attractive single stage dc-ac conversion that is able to buck and boost the voltage. For applications with a variable input voltage, this inverter is a very competitive topology. This work starts with the analyzing the impendence network and its modes of operation and its control strategies. The PWM methods are detailed with different boost ratios. In order to reduce the switching loss, a modified PWM scheme is detailed. The comparative study is detailed between these PWM schemes. Applications of Z-source inverter and recent research work on its various topologies and its control techniques are detailed. MATLAB simulations are carried out for R, RL and induction motor loads with all PWM schemes. The hardware has been implemented in the laboratory and has been checked with PWM schemes for R, RL and induction motor loads and then the performance of Z source inverter has been evaluated using V/f control. SPARTAN 3 FPGA kit has been used for the digital control and VHDL code has been generated by using Xilinx System Generator tool kit.
