The conventional converters have inherent drawback like high current harmonics, low power factor and non-sinusoidal line currents. Passive solutions offer reliable, rugged and quiet~reduction of harmonic current and are insensitive to line surges and spikes but have a number of disadvantages. These are heavy and bulky. These may be sensitive to line frequency. To improve power factor and reduce the current harmonics, several circuit topologies of the ac to dc converters have been proposed in the past few years. The dissertation presents the performance characteristics oft e topologies belon _s t A above converter categories. Various new circuits and control-tec it 'que have been developedd to improve the performance of ac/dc converters. This, dis ertation discusses the operation and performance comparison of three high power actor correction circuits. The Flyback type, Isolated Cuk type, Isolated Zeta type power factor correction circuit topologies have been simulated using PSIM software and their performance as been investigated. The performance parameters used for comparison are: power factor, THD, ripple factor, efficiency, component count and cost of the system. All of the three converter topologies have been implemented in hardware for comparison of various performance parameters.en_US
