Development of energy optimizer for the hydro-turbine laboratory being setup at IIT Roorkee is the main aim of this dissertation work. Efficient use energy has become the need of time today due to the increasing demand of the energy and limited availability of fossil fuels. Commercial and residential buildings are major consumers of the energy in most of the countries. Buildings also account for large amount of carbon dioxide emissions, which is one of the main culprits involved in the phenomenon of global warming. In order to meet the future requirements of the electricity and for the protection of environment, energy efficient design and operation of buildings is must. A state-of-art hydro-turbine R&D laboratory is being setup at IIT Roorkee. This report describes different energy efficiency measures which should be incorporated in the design and construction of the building of this laboratory in order to make it energy efficient and environment-friendly or "green" laboratory. The different green building measures suggested for the laboratory building will not only help in reducing the energy consumption but can reduce the impact of the building on environment making it eco-friendly. The energy simulation of the laboratory building has been done with the help of DesignBuilder software. The report describes the different features of the DesignBuilder software. The building model is simulated for nine different cases with different design parameters and features. The simulation results ofall these nine cases are given in the report. A. comparative analysis of these results is made with a view to select the most energy efficient model for the laboratory building The report describes the different hardware and software platforms used in the development of energy optimizer for the laboratory building. The energy optimizer designed in this work includes different systems like energy monitoring, environment monitoring and optimizer software. The energy monitoring is done with the help of ZigBee based wireless energy meters. The development of this meter and ZigBee based wireless indoor environment monitoring system are described in this report. Energy optimizer software has been developed which continuously monitors the indoor environment and energy consumption of different equipments / systems of the laboratory through wireless sensor boards and energy meters respectively. GUIs developed for displaying this energy data for different sections of laboratory separately and for displaying total energy consumption of the building are given in the report. The use of occupancy and daylight sensors to avoid wastage of energy is also discussed in the reporten_US
