Abstract: Non destructive testing (NDT) of engineering materials, components and structures has steadily increased in recent years at an unprecedented rate because of all-round thrust for improving material quality, component integrity and performance reliability. Ultrasonic testing is the most versatile method of NDT as it can be applied to most of the materials. Pulse echo method is the most commonly used method for ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation. In this dissertation work, the FEM based analysis of pulse echo method of ultrasonic testing is proposed. In the pulse echo method, the flaw in the material whose dimensions are known to us has to be detected. ANSYS 7.0, the commercial FEM software is to be used to analyze the time and frequency signatures from the flaw present in the test object. Both the transient and harmonic analysis are conducted for 3D and 2D model for different flaw locations
