Issue Date: 2003
Abstract: In this dissertation instrumentation schemes used in modern hydropower plants are presented and critically examined. Whole work is divided into three parts. In first part powerhouse instrumentation for electrical quantities (voltage, current, frequency) and non electrical quantities (vibration, temperature and speed) is presented. Principle of measurement for every parameter is discussed and then various options of instrumentation are examined. Similarly in second part dam instrumentation is discussed for the measurement of stress, strain and temperature. Firstly principle is discussed and then instrumentation schemes are critically reviewed. The third part brings out the modern practice of providing SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) system in hydropower plant. First of all elements of SCADA system are discussed and then schematic of a typical SCADA system is presented for a hydro power plant including dam site, valve house, switch yard, transformer hall etc. Typical specifications of instruments have been collected from various sources and are described in Appendix Al. In Appendix A2 and A3 instrument layout is shown.
