Abstract: Transportation planning studies have always laid major emphasis on the choice decisions of travellers. Decision making process in travel scenario involves not only mode choices, but also the choices of travel destination, and type of facilities to be availed during travel and at the destination. However, unlike work and education related trips, analysis of destination choice in leisure travel context is challenging on account of the vast heterogeneity in the preferences of tourists as well as the variability in destination characteristics. The subjectivity involved in the decision making process also needs to be studied. This study relates to the development of destination choice models for leisure travel in order to analyse. their decision making process. The models are based on the utility maximization hypothesis which assumes that an individual's choice is a reflection of underlying preferences for each of the available alternatives and that individual selects the alternative with the highest preference or utility. The data required for the study is collected from six study cities, which are identified based on the leisure values. Out of the study cities, Delhi and Hyderabad has historical heritage value, Kochi/Alleppy and Goa are famed waterfront destinations and Tirupati and Haridwar/Rishikesh have a distinct religious character. Personal interview technique is used to collect the relevant data using a self-administered questionnaire. Data related to the trip characteristics, socio-demographic characteristics and qualitative data relating to choice of a destination are collected. The preliminary analysis of data is carried out first to explore the leisure travel characteristics. The analysis of decision making process is studied by developing models of the nested logit structure. Multinomial logit model (MNL) is prepared for the leisure value of historical and cultural heritage and Nested logit (NL) models are developed for other leisure values. From the data analysis, it was observed that previous visits to the destination are making prominent effect on the revisit intention of the destination. Majority of the sample were self-planned trips. The resources in terms of money and time affect the tourists' decisions. Safety at destination is given primary importance in making destination choice decision. From the development of destination choice models, it is clear that the socio-demographics plays an important role in the decision making. The number of elderly persons in the family influences the choice of destinations and planning to a great extent.
