Issue Date: 2003
Abstract: Digital image processing has broad spectrum of applications such as remote sensing via satellite and other spacecrafts, image transmission and storage business applications, medical image data processing, robotics and automated inspection of industrial parts. The most important aspect of image data processing is image enhancement and segmentation. The principle objective of segmentation techniques is to process an image so that the result is more suitable than the original image for a specific application. Segmentation subdivides an image into its constituent regions or objects. In this dissertation work, algorithms for image segmentation have been developed using c++. These programs have been tested on real life images like ultrasound image of a fetus, image of moving aircraft, sunset image, and a face image of a girl. The image data has been taken in TIFF (Tag Image File Format). All images used are, 8-bit gray level TIFF images. The TIFF format is chosen, as it is an industry standard for digital image data communication. Qualitative comparison has been drawn between various segmentation operators for different images
