Abstract: A fast-response PC-based on — line vibration and air-gap monitoring system has been developed for fault detection and preventive maintenance. The system, based on an indigenous Data Acquisition card PCL-208 mounted in 33 MHz PC-386 compatible machine, monitors vibration and air-gap. The system acquires vibration and air-gap signals with high resolution and computes peak-to-peak vibration amplitude, average frequency, frequency spectrum for vibration signal and the air-gap pattern. Fast execution speed has been achieved by performing data acquisition and frequency spectrum computation using C-language. Vibration signals up to 1 KHz can be analyzed. The use of general purpose PC and C-programming language make the vibration and air-gap monitoring system simple, economical and adaptable to variety of problems. The on-line vibration monitoring system has been tested on a simple vibrator and has been found to work satisfactorily. The air-gap monitoring system has been tested in the laboratory by developing a simple working model. This system too works satisfactorily
