In this thesis' work an attempt has been made , to investigate the improvement of small signal stability of a power system using UPFC. For this purpose, Phillips-Heffron state space model for Single Machine Infinite Bus (SMIB) system, in which a UPFC has been installed, has been developed. To improve the damping of the system, a damping controller of the UPFC using LQR (Linear Quadratic Regulator) method has been designed. The improvement in the system damping has been validated by eigenvalue analysis of both the open loop (UPFC without controller) and the closed loop (UPFC equipped with a controller) systems.en_US
